Week 5: Cute Cuddly Chlo-Bear

Chloe is just so adorable. I love her big eyes (and how intelligent she is just soaking in her surroundings), her cute cheeks, soft skin, long piano fingers, her little button nose and adorable chin. She is so perfect. I love the contrast between her and Marshall. They are both such beautiful babies in such different ways.

What a funny personality that is starting to emerge from my Cuddly Chlo-Bear (or Daddy’s Little Glo-Worm). She is just so sweet but loves all sorts of attention (and being cuddled). She has a ready smile each time I talk to her or smile at her. She sometimes gets a huge grin on her face that is just absolutely adorable!

Even Marshall can’t resist her charms. He is becoming more and more fascinated with her. I can’t wait for them to play with each other.

Cutest yawn ever!

1 Month Old

Miss Chloe is one month old! She is doing very well and at her wellness check-up she weighed in at 8 lbs 9 oz and is 22 inches long! She is starting to open her eyes and occasionally she makes the cutest coos. Her eyes are starting to lighten around the irises to a grey and her hair is sandy colored with white blonde roots. She is very sweet and very cute. Even Marshall is charmed by her. He likes to come to her and hold her hand.

Week 4: Me and My Big Brother

Chloe is beginning to be much more alert and has quit cluster feeding in the evenings (yeah we’re over the first growth spurt) so she can cuddle with Daddy now, much to Daddy’s happiness. She also had her first smile response to my voice this week, which made me very happy.

Since her feeding schedule has normalized to every 2-3 hours, she has begun to change her sleep schedule from the same time as Marshall to waking while he is asleep. What a little smarty pants at just 1 month old – knowing when to optimize her attention with her parents!
Marshall has gotten used to her being around. He treats her as if she has always been with us and doesn’t seem to harbor any negative feelings toward her. He is so cute, when he wants to love on her he says “AWWWWW” then will grab her hand. He just loves to hold her hand and is so fascinated with her little fingers. You can tell that she really loves her big brother and her eyes will follow him as he moves about busily.

Still he has no concept of how fragile she is and I am on a heightened state of alert always to make sure she doesn’t get hurt, but even with both of them in arms length accidents still happen and she takes it all in stride. I know I said it before when she was in for her jaundice; Miss Chloe is made of some sterner stuff – when she gets older she will probably go head to head with him.

Week 3: 1st Growth Spurt

This week was great for Marshall Chloe and I to get into a routine. Chloe spent much of the week sleeping during the day and feeding every 2 ½ to 3 hours but in the evenings from 3pm to 9pm she just ate every hour. With the feeding frenzy came fussiness. It wasn’t too bad but I think it was frustrating for Chris not getting to cuddle with the little cutie pie.

Week 2: I'm an Awesome Baby!

What an awesome little Baby. She is so quiet and good throughout the day, even when her brother is making advances at her or is being loud. She is just so laid back. It reminds me a lot of Marshall at this stage with how easy she is; the only difference is she doesn't get very angry and hardly ever cries. The only sounds she really seems to make are squeeks. It is really cute. When she is awake during the day/night she is mostly just looking in the direction of Marshall. Already an adoring fan of her big brother; but he is a cutie pie too! Her jaundice is still getting better, but she has had some blood in her stools, which Dr. B said could be a milk allergy. I've had to cut dairy out of my diet. Not sure yet if this is a permanent thing, but if it is I'll certainly miss dairy products while I breastfeed because the special non-cow's milk formula can get expensive. Her stools were also watery early this week. I was really freaking out because I was afraid of her getting dehydrated. I think things have toned down for now and she seems to be doing fine.

Week 1 (cont.): Back at Home

Here are some photos of Chloe back at home. She is such a precious angel and is so good. These photos just don't do justice to her cuteness.

Week 1: Chloe Glowie – Our Little Glo-Worm

24-hours after she was born the hospital started running tests because she was starting to look Jaundicey. Her bloodwork came back as 6.4 mg/dl (average full-term newborn will have a peak level of 6mg/dl on the third or fourth day of life. Levels usually go down to about 2 to 3mg/dl by the end of the first week), which is a little high but nothing to be worried about.

When we checked out of the hospital 48 hours after her birth, she was up to 11.3, which was continuing to escalate high enough that the Pediatrician wanted us to come back to the hospital the next day for a follow-up blood test. Saturday her bloodwork increased to 15.7, and we went back to the hospital again on Sunday for follow-up bloodwork.

Chris and I waited for the bloodwork to be processed and the Pediatrician called us to say that it had risen to 20.3 and that we would have to admit our baby into the hospital since the levels were increasing to dangerous levels (when the levels get to be over 25 there becomes risk of cerebral palsy and brain damage).

Chloe was such a trooper throughout the whole ordeal. The only time she fussed was when her diaper was changed and her clothes taken off. Never mind that she has had about 12 heel pricks (I don’t mind one or two times of this but to have her heel pricked and her tiny foot forcibly squeezed until enough blood comes out to fill a small vial is really so heart wrenching), and it took the nurses 5 tries to find a vein to place her IV catheter in (in the end, they had to put one in a vein in her head). Unbelievably she did not cry; and even slept during most of this ordeal.

Chris went home to try to get Marshall’s routine back to normal, while Chloe and I got a room to ourselves and she was put into an incubator for phototherapy. The doctor told me to not breastfeed her and to give her formula only until her levels started to decrease. Luckily throughout the day she did a lot of pooping (I think I changed 12 diapers) and by evening her levels came down to 14. We were finally able to go home at 8:00pm on Monday night with an 11.7 after I talked the Pediatrician into letting us continue treatment at home using a Bili-Blanket.

The little girl is still a little yellow, but she seems to be getting better. Luckily the ordeal didn’t affect my milk supply (the hospital’s internet access was down so I had nothing else to do other than pump and watch TV). In fact I think this whole ordeal made her prefer the breast and breastmilk over formula and her pacifier.
